Transport Planning

|
Comprehensive transport planning is a complex, target-oriented and communicative process with numerous feedbacks in order to control the process of transforming a negative initial situation in the field of transport and traffic into a generally accepted, improved status.
The understanding of modern transport planning is combined with terms like integrated, multimodal, comprehensive and efficiency-based.
Integrative means that transport planning has to be understood not as an isolated task, but as an integral part of the overall regional and urban planning. Considering interdependences and interactions, e.g. between land use, mobility and environment, is a precondition for sustainability and consistency.
Multimodal means the incorporation of all traffic modes - individual motorized and public transport, as well as un-motorized traffic, with the target of making best use of each single traffic mode and integrate them into a well-balanced mobility network.
Comprehensive means to consider all relevant aspects of transport development, like impact on landuse, urban quality, ecology, landscape, environment and natural resources.
Efficiency based means to establish a qualitative basis to evaluate and compare planning alternatives and to identity the preferred concept. This requires the use of computer-aided traffic models.
